2. Gerhard The Miller’s Mill. The town’s richest man and thus also influential. Large and rotund, jovial and friendly. Liked by everyone and definitely not a fighter. On town council.
3. The Golden Tankard Inn. Owned and run by Tad Oakbeam, a retired combat veteran and bard looking like Till Lindemann. The inn is not luxurious, but clean and homely, the food is delicious if simple and the family friendly and kind, even if Tad is not much of a talker. His wife and daughters do the cooking, talking and serving, assisted by maids and cooks, and a stablehand.
4. The Wearied Wagon; Hrymgast the Cartwright’s shop, a skilled Cartwright from Crumnor, who has set up shop here, become a wealthy man and married a local widow. Even earning enough trust to be on the town council.
5. Outfitters; Wyat’s store outfitting explorers, miners, adventurers, hunters, mercenaries, etc. He has non-magical versions of almost any gear you can think of. And sometimes (3% chance) an unknown treasure of some sort that he is unaware of. All magic coming in he is aware of is sold to Adalberth the Knight on behalf of Duke Inthall Melbrane.
6. The Castle. Held by Constable Adalberth, a poor knight of exceptional bravery and chivalry, known, loved and admired by all the rough soldiery of the armies of Rishail, and feared by all evil beings around it. Small and Lithe and with sight damaged by lime thrown into his eyes at the intaking of a Crumnor town; he looks nothing like a warrior, but is reputed to be the bravest man in the Kingdom. Based on Sir Nigel Loring of The White Company. He has 10 Longbowmen, 10 Spearmen and 5 medium Cavalry. And a small Temple to Torm with a lvl 9 Cleric and two acolytes.
7. Jankin The Blacksmith, can make simple weapons and mend simple armours, but not a weaponsmith. This is something of a problem for Sir Adalberth, but he makes do with a the Dwarven merchants visiting, who will carry them off to be repaired. On town Council.
Apart from Wyat there is a market Wednesday and Saturday in the Market Square, with locals bartering produce and the travelling merchants who are visiting on that day. Dwarves bring weapons and armour, Elves might bring herbs, spell components and very rarely spells and magic items. Humans from south and north brings exotic wares from north, east and south.
Important NPCs
Eobrand The Horsebreeder.
Lvl 4 Champion. Fairly rich and influential, on town council. Bald, redbeard, mid- forties, athletic from riding, friendly, kind and soft-spoken when not talking shop, sharp and shrewd when he is. Plays a lute well sometimes. Quiet voice.
Gerhard The Miller
Large and rotund, jovial and friendly. Liked by everyone and definitely not a fighter. Oldermand in the town. High-pitched voice, and a nose for a profit. But also a soft heart, which sometimes lets him look away while the poorer peasants get their grain churned to flour and thus charge less than the full price for it. Civilian.Tad Oakbeam
(Image generated by Canva AI of "Till Lindemann Fantasy Innkeeper")
Tad Oakbeam is a retired soldier and Bard (lvl 5/2) in his fifties, who has spent his savings buying an inn in Amrill. He is a big and heavyset man with a deep baritone voice, but- uncharacteristic for a Bard- quiet and withdrawn when not singing. He let his wife and beautiful older daughter Anusha be the face of the inn, while he serves as organiser and bouncer, only stepping forth, if there is little other choice. Though his age has made some muscles go to fat, he is still a very strong man, and rarely is there trouble in the inn. But then, he is also liked by most people in town and is on the town council. He does bear a mutual hatred for Viga-Hrapp, and dislikes Otkel for being weak, ambitious and gullible. He and Eobrand are friends, and often fish in the river to relax or train with weapons to keep fit. Tad is based on Till Lindemann.
Hrymgast The Cartwright
Hrymgast the Cartwright’s shop, a skilled Cartwright from Crumnor, who has set up shop here, become a wealthy man and married a local widow. Even earning enough trust to be on the town council. Civilian. He speaks in a Welsh accent.
Wyat the Merchant
Wyat has inherited the local store from his father, and has done as well as can be expected from a time with dwindling trade. Actually making a little money. He is a bit tight with it, and his table is not as rich as it could be potentially be, which some of the other town elders sometimes teasing him in a friendly manner.
Jankin The Blacksmith
Lvl 3 BM veteran soldier, stocky as a Dwarf. Jankin has returned from the wars to learn the trade from the old blacksmith, before the latter died. Not a weaponsmith sadly, and a difficult man to deal with; stubborn and gruff till you earn his trust. Like Tad, he dislikes Otkel and Viga-Hrapp, and they are working to set the villagers against him. Jankin can make a knife, a basic spear or basic axe, but not specialised and refined axes for combat (his axes are Disadvantage in combat).
Father Jacques
Other personalities in Amrill:
Elves and Men of Nan Uial (Sin. Twilight Vale) know the young Adûn-Man (Dunedain) living in Eryn Elmoth (Forest of Starry Dusk) as "Adanedhel" (Man-Elf). He has been fostered there for five years, since his restless spirit and longing for defending The Free Peoples would keep him quiet in Lagon no longer, and he was sent to his foster-brother Mal'Bro'Sac Athulain in Eryn Elmoth to help fight the Goblinkind of Harpy Woods. He has done so since then, rarely abiding in Queen Melrianna's realm, but usually on the border with his great blade and his two Scout friends; Mal'Bro'Sac Athulain and Farkilan Neldorlas (Beechleaf). It is also known that he has lived with the Elves of Lagon for five years before that. But not why, though most can guess it has something to do with the strive and occupation of Dor Emyn under the old King who lost it to Kharadune. That too would explain the shadow of sadness always on him.
He has grown huge even for a Dunedain, towering above his Elven friends at 7'4" (224 CM), and though not fully grown into his strength, at 22, he already weighs 130 Kg, and is very athletic and strong. As such he stands out in any crowd, which he really dislikes as he is a somewhat shy and humble (if not without some pride) young man with a fierce but gentle heart. Several Elven maidens as well as the young (and not so young) women of Amril have been frustrated by his shyness and low opinion on his own looks, in their attempts to get closer to him. All this is well known in Amril and Eryn Elmoth both, as the three scouts are often guests at Tad's Golden Tankard Inn - even if they cannot always afford to spend the night there and sometimes sleep in the open due to Mal'Bro'Sac spending their silver on wine.
Less commonly known (so players should not read the following unless asked to) is why he lives with Elves and not in Dor Emyn.
One of the oldest and noblest of the Warden families of Dor Emyn is that of House Camthalion, a Branch of the Mitheithel House. The sons and daughters of this house tower above most others as Wardens of the Borders, and Dudannan of the Menhirs, they are automatically expected to excel at one or the other.
Currently, both organisations and the house are still partly underground. The Keriakos of Kharadune is looking hard for them in the contested and newly liberated territory (Keriakos is a powerful organisation of mages, Priests and Warlocks of Kharadune). For years Kharadune has infringed on Dor-Emyn with no resistance from weak kings in Grathmar, and ten years ago, Camthalion sent Eirenion for safety and fostering with two Elves of Lagon, whose lifes he had saved. One had left looking for his life’s love, the other fostered the boy with her own son Mal’Bro’Sac. ”In the Time that followed Ereinion grew high in the favour of the Elves, and well-nigh all hearts were turned to him there. For he was young, and only now reached his full manhood; and he was in truth the son of Marayel Eledhwen to look upon: dark-haired and pale-skinned, with grey eyes, and his face beautiful as those of mortal men of the elder days. His speech and bearing were that of the ancient kingdom of Lagon, and even among Elves he might be taken for one from the great vanished houses of the Noldor, therefore many joined in calling him Adanedhel, the Elf-Man. Furthermore, He wielded his Greatsword, with such prowess and skill in warfare on the confines of the realms that he also became known as Mormegil, the black sword. But a doom was upon him, and the sorrow of his house had hardened him, grim and fell he seemed to the Elves, rarely smiling even if always kind of heart; yet still noble and tall.
He became mighty among the Elves, but he had no liking for their manner of warfare, of ambush, and stealth and secret arrow, or even magic, and he yearned for brave strokes and battle in the open.
So forth he went to do war upon the enemy with only a few friends, and his renown grew, and shall reach the ears of all the mighty- but none knew his name, rumour spoke only of Adanedhel Mormegil, great amongst Men and Elves.”
Money, Prices and Goods
This is based on the prices of Medieval England and Ancient Rome.
Metal
exchange rate is fairly stable in this period (silver to gold between
9:1 and 14,2:1 from Rome and to this day) 1 gr gold = 12,5 gr silver,
1 gr silver = 2,5 gr Bronze and 5 gr copper
However precious
metals seems to have been quite widespread in the Middle Ages, with
inflation from Rome to 15th/16th century of which we know a lot. A
Roman legionnaire (elite, heavy infantry) or cavalrist at the time of
Augustus got paid around 20 gr of silver a month; in the 14th
century a well-trained heavy infantryman would be paid 300 gr and 400
gr in the 16th. Auxilia got paid 7 gr a month and “Welsh
Infantry” around 100 gr. However, a Centurion under Augustus would
gain 1265 gr a month, while a Centenar during the Hundred-Years-War
got 6oo gr. The same trend shows with other officers. Perhaps the
inequality was just so much larger in Roman times (I know it was
large, I am a historian, but not as large as this, if that is the
cause). The fact that Cicero paid about a ton of silver for a table-
which is about half of the cost of a Legion which Crassus said you
could not call yourself rich if you could not recruit- would indicate
as much. Sadly the coins were so debased at Diocletian’s time that
I have left his Edict of 301 out of my list. I am simply not enough
of a numismati historian to do that with validity. Maybe some later
date.
Most of the Medieval prices I found are from 13th- 16th century, and I have adjusted them to reflect my version of Middle-earth and my homebrew world. The soldier’s wage is much like in Rome, but the higher ranks are not as extravagantly paid.
Prices until around TA 2000 after the fall of Arthedain and Moria
You could argue that with that and the decline of Gondor there is little demand or supply, so prices stay the same- except for Mithrill, which more than doubles towards the end of the Third Age, if any coins still exists. If they do they are in deep vaults, noone has any use for such valuable coins in the dwindling realms.
